IS APPEARANCE IMPORTANT?

To close our unit about appearance and open our second unit about cities. I invite you all to watch this publicity stunt by Carlsberg.  It takes place at the cinema of a big city. Please watch the commercial:

Now comment on it trying to answer these questions:
How would you describe the appearance of the "bikers" in the advertisement? What did you think about them the first time you saw them? Why did they all clap the couples that decided to stay?
Is appearance important? Does it really reveal our personality? Do we have old-fashioned schemes to judge people by their appearance?
What would you do in a situation like this?

  1. The appearance of the ‘’bikers’’ is scruffy and a bit old-fashion. They’ve got lots of tattoos on his arms and they’re very corpulent. When I saw them the first time in the advertisement, I thought that they were frightening, because their appearances are scruffy, and their faces looked like they were a bit angry. That’s why some of the couples didn’t enter the room. All the ‘’bikers’’ clapped the couples that decided to stay in spite of being surrounded by the ‘’bikers’’ who looked scruffy and a bit angry, they entered the room to see the film without caring about them.

Sometimes we judge persons only by their appearance, but it shouldn’t be like this. So the appearance it isn’t really important, because we have to judge persons by how they are, not only by their appearance. Often our appearance can reveal our personality, but also can not reveal it. For example, one person can be scruffy, and be very nice too.

In a situation like this I don’t know what I’d do concretely, but I think that I wouldn’t stay there, because I’d be a bit frightened. So I’d leave and if I could, I would change my ticket to see other film.

  2. They are very big and strong men and they’re frightening. I didn’t know that it was like a joke for a commercial so I thought that I wouldn't stay there with those men because the bikers are bad men. I don’t say it only for their appearance, also for their fame and the things they do.

When they clapped, I understood that they did it because the couples dared to sit.

I think that the first impression comes from the appearance, that this is very important, but I also think that we can NOT judge people by their appearances and so I don't like to do it because the appearances are deceiving.

  3. The appearances of the “bikers” in the advertisement are very bad. All the “bikers” wear scruffy clothes. They also look evil and violent people. The first time that I saw them I thought that they were people that only wanted to fight.
The "bikers" decided to clap the couples because, for them the people who stayed in the cinema were considered as brave people.
The appearance is very important; the first thing you see in a person makes you prejudge him or her before meeting the person.
The appearance in some ways yes, and not in others, reveal our personality. Many people judge people by what they see of them, without knowing them before.
If it happened to me the same that occurred in the advertisement, I would do the same that people who stayed in the cinema.

    Conclusion

Certainly what you say is more important than what people see. The appearance, however, is an important aspect of a person. I think that the advertisement is a really interesting example of tolerance between different kinds of people.

  4. The bikers have got piercings and a lot of tattoos. Most of them wear black t-shirts and broken jeans, so they look really scruffy. When I saw them the first time I was suprised and scared because they are frightening, but if I think twice I would sit there.
When the couples decided to stay in the cinema room and they sit, all the bikers clapped. I think they clapped because the couples put aside their prejudices and they were brave.
In our society I think appearance is very important because everything is based on that: our jobs, our friends, all around us... However, this image doesn´t reveal our personality. I think in most cases it can´t reflect our interior, for example, in the advertisement I think all of them aren´t bad boys or criminals just for having this appearance, maybe some of them are fantastic and friendly persons.
About the second last question, I think so. We have old-fashioned schemes to judge people by their appearance, but I think it´s not the only case. Sometimes we have prejudices before meeting persons and getting to know their personalities because they belong to another culture, race or ethnic group. So we have old-fashioned schemes to judge different people.
Finally, I think that if I was in this situation I would sit in the cinema room. First I had doubted it but If I think about it again I would sit. I´m really sure.

  5. Hi teacher!
In my opinion, people are frightened by the appearance of the "bikers". They are tall, strong, big and they have tattoos and piercings. We have the bad habit of judging people by their appearance, because it's the first thing we see. Although we do it by instinct.
The people who stay and sit next to bikers, these people are brave. So, people applaud when they sit.
The important thing is inside the person, but when we see it, we draw a conclusion from the person. Generally, people who are strong and have tattoos, make us feel fear or "respect". I think in that situation all of us feel fear, but only a  few overcome it.

I don't know what I would do in that situation, but I think I would stay. Honestly, I think that would be frightening, but I can overcome it.

    Kisses!

  6. Last weekend I planned to go to the cinema with my boyfriend. When we entered  the cinema a lot of bikers were sitting in all the sites except two. I decided to sit because we had  paid to watch the film. They looked scruffy. They were wearing dark t-shirts, a pair of jeans and black militar boots. I felt really nervous and impressed because they were not sitting properly and they looked a bit agressive. Finally we sat down and all the guys started to clap. It was an advertisement! It was really funny.
Appereance is important for me because the fist time you see someone you can know she/he what kind of person is. On the other hand, the appearance can lie to you. I think that you have to know well someone before judging him/her.

  7. I would describe these men as being very strong and very big, they have tattoos all over their bodies, they look sloppy, all of them wear black clothes and are very impressive.
When I first saw these men in the video they gave me the feeling that if you sat down they would steal something from you.
They applauded these people because they did not mind the bikers appearance and sat down, they applauded them for their courage.
I think appearance is important because it describes the person, but looks are deceiving
There are people who judge people by their physical appearance, but it does not mean they are the same inside.
In this situation I would go out of the cinema, that's the truth, because to see yourself sitting among 150 bikers is is a little scary. I would go away.
