IS APPEARANCE IMPORTANT?

To close our unit about appearance and open our second unit about cities. I invite you all to watch this publicity stunt by Carlsberg.  It takes place at the cinema of a big city. Please watch the commercial:

Now comment on it trying to answer these questions:
How would you describe the appearance of the "bikers" in the advertisement? What did you think about them the first time you saw them? Why did they all clap the couples that decided to stay?
Is appearance important? Does it really reveal our personality? Do we have old-fashioned schemes to judge people by their appearance?
What would you do in a situation like this?

The UK and The USA, Two Multicultural Countries.

After listening to Antonio's and Pepe´s presentation about "Multicultural Britain" (Report 1 in your text book) and after reading the article "Melting Pot or Salad Bowl", about multiculturality in The USA, we had an interesting debate in class about this aspect of both societies. Please leave your comment and opinion here. Mention what you think about immigration. Is it a "plus" to the country that receives immigrants  or is it a "danger"? What do you think is better or richer to live in a multicultural place or in a non multicultural one?

INVICTUS, THE FILM

As the project for my students in the third year, we have watched the film INVICTUS in English with English subtitles. I divided the film in three different sections and prepared worksheets for them to fill in. Thus, we had the chance to focus on the language, the dialogues, the sceneries, the characters and all the ideas and relevant topics in the film. After collecting details about all these sections, I gave them an outline to write about the film. They will have to hand in their written project and be ready to speak about it in class where we'll have a debate. As a continuation of it I'm asking my students to include their comments here.

Invictus is a film by Clint Esatwood, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. It is based on the book Playing the enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed a Nation, by John Carlin. The film, as the book, "tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team to help unite their country".  It is a very interesting and moving film that really touches you with Mandela's unquestionable words about how "forgiveness liberates the soul and removes fear". Reconciliation, restraint and courage...those were Mandela's weapons, and those should be our own unique weapons so as to be able to recite along with  him the last two lines of the poem "Invictus", by William Ernest Henley, after which the film is named: "I am the master of my fate / I am the captain of my soul"

I think my students enjoyed the film as much as I do any time I watch it. It was worth using it in class!!!

WEST SIDE STORY, THE FILM

After reading Romeo and Juliet with my students in the fourth year of Secondary Education, we watched the film West Side Story, based on the play by Shakespeare, but adapted to describe the conflicts between two rival gangs in New York in the 1950's.

The film was awarded with ten Oscars in 1961, included "Best film Award" and it was a real turning point in the hsitory of musical films. It was directed by Robert Wise and the music, famous all over the world, was written by Leonard Bernstein and the lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Jerome Robbins was in charge of the coreography and Ernest  Lehman was the scipt writer.

We saw the film in English with English subtitles, but they could follow it quite well. I think they all enjoyed the film, but just to make sure I would like all of them to write a comment on the film including his/her opinion about the film but mentioning any other details like the differences with the play Romeo and Juliet, the topics on the film, the actors and actresses, the sceneries, etc...

To my students:
I would appreciate if you all sign your comments with your real names as a continuation to the debate we had in class. Thank you to you all.

I'm looking forward to reading your comments!!

THE CANTERVILLE GHOST, THE FILM

After reading the book The Canterville Ghost  in class with my students in the third year of Secondary Education, we have seen the film with the same title and based on the tale by Oscar Wilde.

The film was made in 1944 in the USA. It was directed by Jules Dassin and the script was written by Edwin Harvey Blum. We saw the film in English with subtitles in Spanish so that everyone could follow it easily but still had plenty of exposure to the English language.

My impression was that all my students enjoyed the film, but just to make sure, I'd love all of them to write a comment on the film. I would also appreciate if you could all sign with your real names and would comment on the differences between the film and the book, besides mentioning any other details about the director's job, the sceneries, the actors and actresses, etc....

I'm looking forward to your comments!!
